Local Expertise in Knoxville: We Know This Area
Knoxville ground has a personality. The ridges are steep and rocky, the valleys are red clay over limestone and dolomite, and sinkholes show up where you least want them. Beaver Creek winds through Halls, Powell, and Karns on its way to the Clinch River, and its low spots stay wet long after a rain. First Creek drains the base of Black Oak Ridge through Fountain City. We read all of that before we quote a job, because a sinkhole or a wet bottom changes how you clear, where you put a pad, and how you move water off the site.
Our trucks and trailers run these roads every day. From north Knox County we're on Maynardville Pike, Emory Road, and Broadway in minutes, then out Clinton Highway and Oak Ridge Highway, or down I-75 and I-640 to the rest of town. We work west off Pellissippi Parkway and Hardin Valley Road, south of the river along Chapman Highway, and out Northshore Drive toward Concord. We know which back roads can take a lowboy and which ridge driveways need a smaller machine.
The work changes depending on where you are in Knoxville. Hardin Valley has been adding subdivisions so fast that Hardin Valley Road is being widened, so we see a lot of lot clearing and house pads out there. In Karns and Powell, farms and pasture still sit between neighborhoods, so it's grown-up fields, fence lines, and acreage. Around Fountain City and the wooded hills near the Knoxville Urban Wilderness in South Knoxville, it's steep infill lots and driveways cut into the hillside.
Permits are part of the job here. Knox County Stormwater generally requires a Land Disturbance/Grading Permit for disturbing an acre or more, and for smaller sites with 5 feet or more of cut or fill, plus state coverage from TDEC on the larger jobs. Inside city limits, the City of Knoxville has its own rules, and slopes over 15 percent fall under the Hillside and Ridgetop Protection Plan. Weather matters too. Winter clay turns to grease, spring storms flood the Beaver Creek bottoms, and ice storms drop trees across driveways. We plan around all of it.
