Field gone to briars and sweetgum? Fence line you can't walk anymore? We grind it down to mulch in place, with no burn piles and no haul-off.

Google Reviews

Brush mulching is how we take back open ground that's gone wild: old hayfields full of sumac and blackberry, fence lines swallowed by privet, ditch banks you can't mow, and trails that closed up two summers ago. It's one part of our forestry mulching service, scaled to smaller material, so it moves faster per acre. Superior Land Management is a Knoxville land clearing and excavation company based in north Knox County, and our brush clearing services run from Halls and Gibbs out to Corryton, Blaine and beyond. Owner Chandler Humphrey runs the mulching head himself, so the person who quotes your field is the person who clears it. You get open, walkable ground with the soil still covered and the roots still holding it. Call or text Chandler at (865) 412-7121 for a free walk-through.

Signs It's Time for Brush Mulching

A field that skips mowing for a few seasons fills with briars and sprouts; give it five more and those sprouts are 4-inch sweetgum, cedar and locust a bush hog can't touch. Every year you wait, mulching land that was a one-day job becomes a three-day job.

  • Your bush hog bounces off saplings or you've already broken a blade or shear bolt on them.
  • Blackberry, multiflora rose or greenbrier has closed off part of a field or a path to the barn.
  • You can't see or reach the fence to check or repair it.
  • Ditch banks or a roadside edge are too steep or too thick to mow safely.
  • Trails, food plots or shooting lanes have grown shut before hunting season.
  • You just bought land, are getting ready to list it, or want buyers and surveyors to see the actual property lines.

What Our Brush Mulching Includes

Brush mulching means grinding standing brush, briars and small trees on open ground into a mulch layer that stays on site, using a mulching head instead of chainsaws, burn piles or a dump truck.

  1. 01

A Walk of the Ground Before the Machine Moves

Before any brush clearing services start, Chandler walks the area with you and flags what stays: a shade tree, a spring, a property pin, a fence you want saved. Old barbed wire grown into a fence row wraps a mulching drum fast, and limestone outcrops dull carbide teeth, so we mark both and work around them.

  2. 02

    Mulching With an Excavator-Mounted Head

We run a mulching head on a Cat excavator. The rotating drum with fixed teeth grinds briars, vines, saplings and most trees up to about 6 to 8 inches into chips where they stand. Because the head is on a boom, it reaches down ditch banks, over a fence to the far side, and up embankments where a tracked skid steer would slide or tip.

  3. 03

A Mulch Layer That Stays on Your Ground

Nothing gets burned or hauled. The ground-up material lands as a mulch layer that shades the soil, slows runoff, and holds back the next flush of weeds for a while. Stumps are ground to near grade, not pulled, so roots keep holding your clay on hillside pastures and ditch banks.

  4. 04

    Maintenance Passes on a Schedule

Privet, sweetgum, sumac and blackberry come back from the roots. Many landowners book a lighter re-mulch pass every one to three years, depending on what's resprouting, to keep fence lines, trail systems and field edges from closing up again. Herbicide follow-up on resprouts is work for a licensed applicator.

The Brush Problems We See Most on East Tennessee Land

  1. Invasives that outrun a bush hog

Abandoned fields here fill with Chinese privet, bush honeysuckle, multiflora rose, autumn olive and Callery pear, all on the Tennessee Invasive Plant Council's invasive plant list. They resprout after mowing, so mulching plus maintenance passes is what turns the corner. If the invasives are under trees you want to keep, that's selective work for our brush and underbrush removal service instead.

  2. Fence lines grown into tree rows

In Knox, Grainger and Jefferson County farm country, we see wire grown into cedar and hackberry for decades. Mulching both sides opens the line for repair, and the boom reaches across without driving over the fence. Owners reclaiming whole fields usually pair this with

  3. Red clay and wet springs

Ridge and Valley clay ruts when saturated, so we schedule brush mulching for drier stretches when we can.

  4. Burn pile season

Clearing the old way means burn piles, and in Tennessee those need a permit from October 15 through May 15 under the Tennessee Division of Forestry debris burning rules. Brush mulching skips the pile, the permit and the smoke complaints from the neighbors.

Why Knoxville Landowners Choose Superior Land Management

The Owner Runs the Machine

Chandler Humphrey has run Superior Land Management since 2021, and he's the one in the excavator seat. More than half the hours on his excavator are mulching hours.

You See Every Line of the Quote

Your quote breaks out machine days, mobilization and any separate work line by line, so you can compare it honestly against another bid. If you want the cheapest number in town, we may not be your crew.

We Come Back If Anything's Wrong

Chandler would rather spend an extra hour on a fence line than leave it half done. If something on your job isn't right, we come back and fix it.

Roadside Mulching Experience for TDOT

We mulch interstate right-of-way for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, clearing brush around highway signs. That's the same steep shoulder, ditch bank and close-to-structure work your road frontage and fence lines need.

Superior Land Management is a four-person crew: Chandler plus three guys. Learn about Chandler and the crew on our About page.

How Our Brush Mulching Works

  1. Walk the Field With Chandler

Chandler walks the brush with you, flagging keeper trees, fence you want saved, wet spots and any old wire or rock, and asks what the ground is for next: pasture, mowing, hunting or a view. You get an itemized written quote. The walk is free.

  2. Schedule Around the Weather

We set a start date around wet weather so the tracks don't rut your clay. Before we arrive, you move livestock out and confirm gate access. You don't need to be home after that.

  3. Edges and Fence Lines First

The excavator unloads and starts with the hardest ground: fence rows, ditch banks and field edges, where the boom's reach matters most. Flagged trees and fence stay untouched.

  4. Mulch the Open Ground

Then the mulching head works across the field in passes, grinding briars, saplings and brush into an even mulch layer and grinding stumps to near grade. If we hit something we didn't plan for, like a buried trash pile or an old foundation, Chandler calls you before going further.

  5. Final Walk and Sign-Off

When the last pass is done, Chandler walks the finished ground with you and fixes any spot you want touched up before the machine leaves. You're left with open ground under a mulch layer, the trees and fence you flagged, and an itemized invoice that matches the quote.

How Much Does Brush Mulching Cost in Knoxville?

Brush mulching is quoted by the machine day, because the work depends on how thick and how big the material is, not just the acreage. Our mulching day rate is $2,000 per machine day. After Chandler walks the property, he estimates the days, so your quote is a total, not an open meter. If you're comparing brush clearing cost per acre, light brush on open ground often runs faster than a day per acre and thick sapling stands slower.

What Changes the Price

  • Stem size and density: briars and 1-inch sprouts go fast; a stand of 6-inch sweetgum takes much longer.
  • Slope and ditch banks: steep ground slows the machine and often needs boom work from the top.
  • Linear work: fence line clearing cost depends on footage, how much wire is grown into trees, and whether we clear one side or both.
  • Access and drive distance: tight gates or a long haul from north Knoxville add mobilization time.
  • Maintenance vs. first cut: a re-mulch pass on regrowth costs far less than the first clearing.

Quoted Separately

  • Stump removal and grubbing for a building site, part of lot clearing.
  • Grading, drainage work or pond repair, handled through our excavation services.
  • Larger trees in a wooded stand, priced as forestry mulching.
  • Herbicide follow-up on resprouts, by a licensed applicator you choose.

Estimates are free. We take cash, check and Venmo.

Brush Mulching FAQ

What is the brush clearing cost per acre?

It depends on what's growing. We price brush mulching by the machine day at $2,000 per day, and light briars on flat ground go much faster than a thick stand of saplings on a slope. Fence line clearing cost depends on footage and how much wire is grown in. Chandler gives you an itemized total after walking the property, so you aren't guessing.

How long does brush mulching take?

A backyard or a few hundred feet of fence line can be a single day. An overgrown multi-acre field might take several, depending on stem size, slope and weather. Your quote states the expected machine days.

Is brush mulching the same as forestry mowing?

Mostly, yes. Forestry mowing, brush mulching and mulching land all describe grinding vegetation in place with a mulching head instead of hauling or burning it. We use "brush mulching" for open ground with briars, saplings and small trees, and "forestry mulching" for wooded areas with larger trees.

Do I need to be home, and what about livestock?

You need to be there for the walk with Chandler; after that it's up to you. Move cattle, horses and pets out of the work area and leave gates unlocked. The mulching head throws debris, so we keep a wide clear zone around the machine.

Will the brush grow back?

Some will. Privet, sweetgum, sumac and blackberry resprout from roots, and mulching doesn't kill roots. The mulch layer slows regrowth, and regular mowing or a maintenance re-mulch every one to three years keeps it in check. Herbicide follow-up needs a licensed applicator.

Why should I hire you over another brush clearing company?

The owner runs the equipment, and you get itemized, line-by-line quotes. We also bring TDOT roadside mulching experience to ditch banks and road frontage. And if anything's wrong after the job, we return to fix it.
