Excavation
Bought land with the perfect house site at the top of the hill and no way to get a truck up there? We cut new gravel driveways through woods and up East Tennessee hillsides.
Google ReviewsDriveway excavation is the first dirt work on most new homesites around Knoxville, and it decides whether every concrete truck and well rig makes it up the hill. Superior Land Management is a Knoxville land clearing and excavation company based in north Knox County, and owner Chandler Humphrey runs the excavator on every driveway we cut. We clear the route, pull the stumps under the roadbed, cut a grade a loaded truck can climb, and build the stone base and ditches. Driveways are one piece of our full excavation services, so the same crew can go on to the house pad and footers. To get a driveway built once, call or text Chandler at (865) 412-7121.

A driveway that starts as a four-wheeler path or a pair of tire ruts only gets worse. Every hard rain on red clay cuts the ruts deeper. Buried stumps rot and drop the surface. Waiting often means hauling out failed stone before the real driveway goes in.

Gravel driveway excavation is the road excavation that turns a line through the woods into a stable, drained, stone-surfaced drive: clearing, subgrade, base and drainage, done in that order.
Chandler flags the route with you, then we clear a corridor wide enough for the drive and its ditches. Brush along the edges can be mulched in place; anything inside the roadbed comes out by the roots, because stumps left under a driveway rot and settle. Logs and stumps are handled as quoted.
Topsoil and roots are stripped and stockpiled, because organic soil stays soft under traffic. We cut the high spots and fill the low ones to an even grade, compacting fill in thin lifts so it doesn't settle. On side slopes we lay the uphill bank back to a stable angle so it won't slough onto the drive.
Where the subgrade is soft red clay, we roll out geotextile fabric before any stone. It keeps clay from pumping up into the base. Next comes a compacted crushed stone base, then a finish layer of top stone.
Water ruins more gravel driveways than traffic does. We shape a crown, cut side ditches, and set culvert pipe where the drive crosses the road ditch or a wet-weather branch. Long drives can get a turnout for passing. You don't need to be home while we work.
Red clay that pumps when it's wet
The red clay subsoil across Knox County holds water and turns to grease under tires. Stone dumped straight on it disappears within a season; fabric under a compacted base is the fix.
Rock ledges on the way up the ridge
Ridge and Valley hillsides often hide limestone or shale a foot or two down. Solid rock may need a hydraulic hammer, quoted separately.
Entrances onto county and state roads
Work in the county right-of-way, including a culvert under the road ditch, falls under the Knox County right-of-way permit. If the driveway connects to a state route, TDOT is clear: "Property owners must obtain a permit from TDOT," through its highway entrance permit program. We plan the entrance and pipe around those rules.
Long drives through heavy woods
A quarter-mile drive plus a house site can top an acre of disturbance and trigger county grading permits. We usually pair it with
View Lot ClearingChandler Humphrey has run Superior Land Management since 2021 with a four-person crew, and he sets the grade on your driveway himself.
The same crew clears the corridor, pulls the stumps, cuts the grade and spreads the stone. No waiting between a tree service and an excavator, and no finger-pointing over a stump left in the roadbed.
Our quotes are itemized, line-by-line quotes. Clearing, stumps, grading, fabric, stone and culverts each get their own line.
Chandler would rather spend an extra day getting grade and drainage right than come back later. If something we built isn't right, we come back and fix it. You can meet Chandler and the crew before you ever book.
Chandler meets you on the property and walks the likely route from the road to the house site. He looks at slope, runoff, rock, trees you want to keep and where the entrance can meet the road. You get an itemized written quote after the visit.
Before any digging, we file a TN811 locate request, which needs at least three working days' notice, so buried lines along the road get marked. Right-of-way or highway entrance permits are sorted out at the same time. We flag the centerline and clearing limits.
The excavator clears the route, pulls stumps out of the roadbed and mulches or piles the edge material as quoted. Topsoil is stripped and stockpiled so fill sits on clean mineral soil.
We cut the high ground, fill the low ground in compacted lifts and shape the crown and side ditches. Culverts and fabric go in where needed. Drainage goes in before stone because stone over a wet subgrade is wasted money.
The crushed stone base is spread and compacted, then the top stone is graded to the crown. Chandler then drives the finished driveway with you and checks ditches and culverts before the machines leave. You're left with a drivable gravel driveway and an itemized invoice that matches the quote.
Every driveway is priced from the route walk. Larger jobs are figured from machine days plus materials: dirt work runs $1,500 per machine day and forestry mulching $2,000 per machine day. Stone, fabric and culvert pipe are listed separately on the quote. We're rarely the cheapest bid; we aim for a driveway you won't rebuild in three years.
Estimates are free. We take cash, check or Venmo.

View Foundation & Basement ExcavationWe work out of north Knox County and cover about 50 miles from home base, across Knox, Loudon, Sevier, Jefferson, Grainger and Hamblen counties. Corryton and the ridges around House Mountain are a short run east across north Knox County. Blaine sits up US-11W (Rutledge Pike) in Grainger County, and Morristown is farther out the same road or by I-40 East to I-81. Jefferson City is east on US-11E (Andrew Johnson Highway) through Strawberry Plains and New Market.
Need a driveway cut in Sevierville? We get there by I-40 East to Exit 407 or down Chapman Highway. Lenoir City is west on I-40/I-75 to Exit 81. Steep Sevier County lots and long farm and access roads in Grainger and Jefferson counties are where grade, rock and runoff matter most. For driveway excavation anywhere in this area, call (865) 412-7121.

View us on GoogleIt depends on length, tree cover, slope, soil and how many culverts the route needs. Larger jobs are priced from machine days ($1,500 dirt work, $2,000 mulching) plus stone, fabric and pipe. Chandler gives you itemized, line-by-line quotes after walking the route.
A short, open driveway can be done in a few days, while a long drive through heavy woods with rock and culverts can take a couple of weeks. We won't compact or stone saturated red clay, so wet spells add time.
If the driveway touches a county road right-of-way, including a culvert under the road ditch, Knox County requires a right-of-way permit. A driveway onto a state highway needs a TDOT highway entrance permit. Larger disturbance, or grading with 5 feet or more of cut or fill, can also require a Knox County land disturbance permit. We'll tell you at the site walk which apply.
Both, in different places. Anything under the roadbed has to come out stumps and all, because buried wood rots and the driveway sinks. Along the shoulders, mulching brush in place is faster and helps hold the banks.
Geotextile fabric goes on soft clay, then a compacted crushed stone base, then top stone graded to a crown. Our machines are Caterpillar, and the owner runs the equipment on every driveway.
No. We'll walk the route with you before work starts and drive it with you at the end. In between, we need gate access, livestock and pets kept clear, and a spot to unload. Chandler keeps you posted by text.
We return if anything's wrong. If a section we built settles or doesn't drain, call Chandler and we'll come back.
It depends on season and workload. We answer 24/7 for urgent digging and storm cleanup, but driveways are scheduled work.
