Forestry Mulching in Knoxville, TN

Woods closing in on the house? Old fields gone to cedar, privet and briars? One machine turns it all into mulch where it stands, with no burn piles and no haul-off.

Google Reviews

Forestry mulching is the job Chandler Humphrey would pick over any other, and it shows in the hours: more than half the time on his excavator has been spent with the mulching head on. Superior Land Management is a Knoxville land clearing and excavation company based in north Knox County, and our forestry mulching services cover wooded lots, overgrown acreage, fence lines, trails, hunting ground and view corridors from Halls and Corryton out to Sevierville and Lenoir City. A rotating drum of carbide teeth grinds standing trees and brush into a layer of mulch that stays on the ground, so there's nothing to burn, nothing to haul, and the soil stays covered. Chandler walks the property with you, runs the machine himself, and hands you a quote you can read line by line. Call (865) 412-7121 to set up a walk.

Signs It's Time for Forestry Mulching

Brush doesn't hold still. A field left alone for three or four East Tennessee growing seasons fills with sweetgum, cedar and privet, and every year the stems get thicker, which means more machine hours and a bigger bill when you finally clear it. Waiting also costs you the use of the land: the trail you can't walk, the fence you can't check, the view you bought the property for.

  • Saplings and cedars are taking over a field you used to mow or hay
  • Privet, bush honeysuckle or multiflora rose has made the woods impossible to walk
  • Fence lines are buried and you can't find, fix or replace the wire
  • Brush has crept within a few feet of the house, barn or outbuildings
  • Trails, roads or food plots on your hunting land have closed in
  • A ridge-top view toward House Mountain or the Smokies is gone behind young timber
  • You just bought acreage, plan to sell it, or need to see what you have before you build

What Our Forestry Mulching Service Includes

Forestry mulching (some call it forestry mowing) is one-pass clearing: a mulching head cuts standing vegetation, grinds it and spreads it back over the ground in a single trip.

  1. 01

A Walk to Mark What Stays

Before the machine moves, Chandler walks the property with you and you decide which trees stay. Good oaks, shade trees near the house, a line of cedars you like for a windbreak: we flag them and mulch around them. We also note gates, soft ground, septic fields and buried lines. You don't need to be home while we work once boundaries and keepers are marked.

  2. 02

One Machine That Cuts, Grinds and Spreads

We run a drum-style forestry mulching head on a Caterpillar excavator. The head handles most trees up to about 6 to 8 inches across routinely. The excavator boom reaches down ditch banks, across fences and up slopes where a track loader would slide.

  3. 03

Stumps Ground Low, Roots Left to Hold Soil

Stumps are ground to about ground level instead of being pulled out. The roots stay in the dirt and keep holding it, which matters on East Tennessee hillsides and red clay that washes when it's bare. The mulch layer slows runoff and holds back new seedlings for a while. If you plan to build, pour or install a septic field on part of the land, that area needs stumps fully removed, which we cover under land clearing.

  4. 04

Cleanup and a Walk Before We Leave

When the mulching is done, we walk the job with you to check every flagged tree, boundary and fence line. Driveways and roads get scraped clean of mulch. You get photos of the finished work and an itemized invoice that matches the quote.

The Land Problems We See Most in East Tennessee

  1. Invasives that come back fast

Chinese privet, bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, tree-of-heaven and Callery pear are on the Tennessee Invasive Plant Council's invasive plant list, and all of them crowd out native woods around Knoxville. Land mulching knocks them down to the ground in one pass, but privet, sweetgum and sumac resprout from the roots. Plan on a follow-up pass, mowing, or treatment by a licensed herbicide applicator.

  2. Burn piles and burn season

Conventional clearing in Tennessee usually ends with brush piles, and burning them from October 15 to May 15 requires a Tennessee Division of Forestry burn permit, with local rules that can be stricter. Forestry mulching skips the pile entirely. No smoke toward the neighbors, no waiting on a burn day.

  3. Steep ground and slick clay

Ridge-and-valley country means wooded hillsides, shallow rock and red clay that turns slick after a rain. Pushing trees out with a dozer leaves that ground bare; mulching keeps the root mat and cover in place so a slope holds through the next storm.

  4. Old fields filling in

Pasture left unmowed for a few years turns to cedar, locust, blackberry and sumac. Our brush mulching page covers open, overgrown fields and maintenance passes.

Why Knoxville Landowners Choose Superior Land Management

Plenty of forestry mulching contractors around Knoxville can rent a mulcher. What you're hiring here is the person who has run one for five years, since 2021, and still learns alongside the operator who taught him.

The Owner Runs the Machine

Owner runs the equipment: Chandler Humphrey is in the cab on your job, not dropping off a new hire. On a four-person crew, the man who wrote your quote decides how close to cut around your keepers.

Mulching Along Tennessee Interstates

TDOT interstate right-of-way mulching is regular work for us: clearing brush and trees around highway signs along Tennessee interstates, where the cut has to be clean and traffic is close. That same care goes onto your property.

You See Every Line of the Quote

Itemized, line-by-line quotes are how we bid every job. Machine days and any separate work are listed out, so you can compare bids honestly.

We Come Back If Anything's Wrong

We return if anything's wrong. Chandler would rather spend an extra day than leave a problem, and in five years no customer has had to call him back about the work.

How Our Forestry Mulching Works

  1. Walk the Property With Chandler

Chandler comes out, walks the ground with you and looks at density, slopes and access. You point out boundaries, keepers and buried lines. You get a written, itemized quote. Estimates are free.

  2. Flag Keepers and Plan the Order

Keeper trees, property corners and no-go areas get flagged with marking tape. We work from the access point outward and top of slope down, so the machine sits on stable, finished ground. If any part of the job involves digging, we place a TN811 locate request ahead of time.

  3. Mulch in Place

The excavator-mounted mulching head cuts and grinds trees, brush and vines and lays the chips back across the ground. Stumps go down to about grade, and roots stay in to hold the soil. Daily, Chandler lets you know where the work stands and whether anything changed.

  4. Clean the Edges

We clear mulch off driveways and roads, tidy fence lines and borders, and smooth any ruts before we leave.

  5. Final Walk and Sign-Off

You and Chandler walk the finished job and check every flagged tree. It isn't done until you say so. You're left with open, mulch-covered ground, photos of the work, and an itemized invoice that matches the quote.

How Much Does Forestry Mulching Cost in Knoxville?

Forestry mulching is priced by the machine day, because the thickness of the growth, not the acreage alone, decides how long the job takes. Our rate is $2,000 per machine day, and after the walk we estimate how many days your property needs. People often ask about forestry mulching cost per acre; an acre of scattered saplings and an acre of solid 6-inch cedar are very different jobs, so we quote per-acre ranges only after seeing the ground.

If you want the lowest number in town, we may not be your crew. If you want it done once and done properly, with every line spelled out, we'd like to look at it.

What Changes the Price

  • Density: scattered brush versus solid thicket
  • Tree size: saplings grind fast; 6-inch-plus trunks take longer
  • Species: cedar and hardwood chew slower than briars and sumac
  • Slope, rock and wet ground that slow the machine down
  • Access: gates, creek crossings and distance from the road
  • Selective work around many keeper trees versus clearing everything

Quoted Separately

  • Full stump removal and grubbing for building sites, through lot clearing
  • Hand-cutting beneath trees you keep, through brush and underbrush removal
  • Oversize trees needing felling and haul-off
  • Herbicide follow-up, which requires a licensed applicator

Estimates are free. Payment is by cash, check or Venmo.

Forestry Mulching FAQ

How much does forestry mulching cost per acre?

We price by the machine day at $2,000 per day, because density and tree size swing the time per acre so much. Light brush can go quickly, while solid cedar or 6-inch hardwood takes far longer per acre. After Chandler walks the land, you get itemized, line-by-line quotes showing the number of days and any separate work. Estimates are free.

How long does forestry mulching take?

Small jobs, like a fence line or a lot edge, can be a single day. Larger acreage with heavy growth can run several days to a couple of weeks. We avoid saturated clay on slopes. Your quote lists the expected number of machine days.

Is forestry mulching the same as land clearing?

Not quite. Mulching land clearing grinds everything in place and leaves stumps at about ground level with roots intact, which is ideal for woods, trails, views, pasture recovery and right-of-way. Conventional land clearing pulls stumps and roots, which you need under a house, driveway or septic field because buried wood rots and settles. Many properties get both.

Do I need to be home, and what about gates and livestock?

You'll want to be there for the first walk and the final sign-off. During the work itself you don't need to be home, as long as gates, keepers and boundaries are marked. Let us know about livestock, pets, buried lines and septic fields so we can keep the machine and the animals apart.

What size trees can a forestry mulcher handle?

Our excavator-mounted head grinds most trees up to about 6 to 8 inches in diameter routinely, plus brush, briars, vines and saplings. Larger trees are mulched with patience or felled separately.

Who actually runs the machine on my property?

Owner runs the equipment. Chandler Humphrey operates the mulcher himself and has done TDOT interstate right-of-way mulching around highway signs. If anything isn't right after we leave, we return if anything's wrong.

Will the brush grow back after forestry mulching?

The mulch layer slows regrowth, but resprouting species like privet, sweetgum and sumac come back from the roots. Most owners follow up with another pass, mowing, or a licensed herbicide applicator.
